May Happenings

With winter lasting past it's welcome, we have had an interesting end of April and beginning of May. Tom has reconnected with a girl (Ashley) from Roseau that he met at the National Youth Gathering when he was a junior in high school. He has been talking on the phone and came up for a weekend to see her at Moorhead State.

Ice-out was late this year. Dad and Boots stopped by for a few days on their way up. I had hoped to get up to Valhalla on the second of May but as it was apparent that I wouldn't be able to get up through the ice, I cancelled a vacation day and stayed home. Meanwhile, Becky's Mom came up to take a table runner class with Becky. We all got in a few games of cards. Being the wise guys we are, Jan only got to shoot the moon once and that happened as a surprise to her as well as us.

Becky went to Nebraska after the boys' finals were over to help them move in. Tom has a new apartment that he shares with one of his roommates from this year. Derrick has a new roommate starting in July.

Derrick and Katie have found a nice two bedroom apartment along the campus bus routes. Katie will live there until she trains Derrick to clean up after himself and then he can move in (or by their honeymoon, whichever comes first).

Tom has a second floor apartment about two blocks from campus.

I had to sing for choir Sunday on Mother's Day. That meant a day trip was all I could get for opener. I went up on Saturday May 10. Dad and Boots were up since Tuesday. The ice went out Wednesday (they had to break ice to get in). You can still see ice on the shore in this picture.

I am in the midst of a building project in Perham (see the Construction Update pages) so don't have any big projects planned at Valhalla this summer. Becky did have me bring up these table decorations.

I took a hike to check out the condition of the cabins. Every one fared pretty well. My rain gauge broke because I forgot to turn it upside down last fall. Dad put up a few new trail signs. Many of the trails were under water with the rain.

Dad's work to knock back the cattails seems to be working.

I left in a snowstorm. This sign says it all.
