Independence Day at Valhalla

Becky and I left the U.S. to celebrate Independence Day weekend. We managed to get my mounted fish up there safely (in the trunk of the Neon with all the luggage).

We had Boots and Dad up for supper a couple times.

The dogs had a lot of catching up to do.

I went fishing to make up for the fact that I didn't bring much in terms of groceries.

On Saturday I went to Stege Bay and caught about five eating sized northerns (which I threw back). On my way back, I caught this one in Grassy Bay. I would have thrown it back but there was no one there to take a picture. As it was, I had to cook baked Northern to get rid of this much meat. It was 13 1/2 lbs and 36 inches.

Marge, Mary, Tom and Siri were up for the weekend. Siri turned four on the second but waited for Sand Point to celebrate.

Mary made a nice butterfly cake.

We sang Happy Birthday to her...

And then she was allowed to blow out the candles and open presents.

Before leaving Sunday, I did some chain saw work. The trail to Little David had three trees down that I cleared. I found a few on Dad's 158th St trail as well. We attended the Power Association meeting in the afternoon. I have taken pictures of those present and posted them on a separate page.

On our way home, we stopped at the Vince Schute Bear Sanctuary near Orr.

One of the bears brought her cubs. Here is one in the tree.

Here are the cubs on the ground with mother.

Vince Schute was a logger. He was the first to introduce the chain saw to Minnesota. This is the first one used in the state.
