July Weekend at Valhalla

Becky and I went up to Valhalla for a four day weekend July 17-20. Mary, Tom and Siri had already been up a week.

We stopped in for a chat with Boots and Dad. Nocona and Ettrick competed for attention (evidently, they never get attention otherwise).

On Saturday morning Dad and I went trolling around Clearwater Bay (mostly around Gary Engel's island). We caught a limit of northerns. Dad caught the biggest one.

This picture of Dad's pet ducks will serve as filler for Sunday (no pictures taken of the many events of that day). It was a perfect beach day so Becky and I went there. Siri came down and went in the water with me but Tom and Mary were content to stay on shore. Later, Tom drove the boat while I got to go skiing. I want my boys to know that I went skiing before any of them this summer.

Becky and I went fishing on Namakan. She caught one that she through back so no picture. Instead, this is the 26 inch northern I hauled in. I threw another 22 inch one back.

I put the fish remains out on a rock for the seagulls. They didn't even wait for me to leave to set in on it. Later, I burned the brush pile (one fifth of which is seen in the background).

I hiked a lot of the trails on Monday. In the back of the lagoon I found this pretty flower.

Also in the back of the lagoon, I found these huge hoof prints that appear to me to be from a moose. I saw moose scat on a number of the trails and saw the moose prints also on the Brantner trail. Blueberries are just about ready for picking. I found about 20 on the Brantner trail but we see thousands of green ones everywhere else. Unfortunately, we will likely miss the season. Another exciting event occurred in the back of the lagoon. I walked past a nest of a spruce grouse. The chicks scattered away from me while the hen came right at me in a ruckus. She then limped a few feet ahead of me until I was safely away from the nest.

On our way home, we spotted these two eagles perched on an island near King Williams Narrows.

Ettrick had such a busy weekend that she was exhausted on the trip home (needless to say, she didn't take a turn driving).

Just as it became completely dark, I was attacked by a deer. It hit me in the side and took out the front light, part of the hood, left front fender and both door panels. Looks like a big repair bill to me.
