Labor Day Weekend

We took a relaxing weekend off for Labor Day. As we had tickets for Mary Poppins on Sunday, there wasn't time for a trip to Sand Point. Instead, we headed to the State Fair.

This was the first time to the Minnesota State Fair for either of us. It is a lot like the Del Mar Fair we attended in San Diego but you have to take all the people that attend the fair and put them into a 2 week time period. It was a massive sea of humanity (maybe like living in Taipei). There were outstanding flower displays including an excellent bonzai tree demonstration.

There were the expected animal displays. This area was unique in that it showed the birthing process. These piglets were born the morning we came through and were only a few hours old. We also saw some newborn sheep trying to stand for the first time.

Yes, Becky found some quilts.

If you thought they were joking about having the dairy princess carved out of butter...

Since my friend Dana is a Cockshutt tractor collector, I took my picture in front of this one.

Sunday morning we visited the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. This is really a treasure to anyone interested in flowers or plants. I was surprised to learn about plants that I never suspected could be sturdy enough to survive a Minnesota winter - including a cactus!

We then went to pick up Becky's Mom for the play. She has quite a nice view from her front window.

The big event was attending the production of Mary Poppins at the Orpheum Theatre. No pictures were allowed so I will substitute some from the internet.

The play is based on the book and the Disney Movie. Although there is a lot of familiar music, there were a few new songs as well. The whole play was fresh as the story is retold with substantial plot differences that mean then story is told in a different order and brisker pace. The acting was great and special effects were amazing. .

The child actors were incredible. The dancing was spectacular. There is nothing but good to be said about this musical. If it comes anywhere near you, GO SEE IT!
